I was a little too put off by Piet to really love this book. The title says it all - Piet is an incredibly self-indulgent and narcissistic young man who mostly gets what he wants through his incredible good looks. And while I couldn't love him I didn't hate him and am interested to see where Richard Mason takes his character in subsequent books. Especially because this volume has an intriguing set up for what's to come.
The secondary thread which explores the dynamics of a rich Dutch family at the turn of the century was also very interesting. Most of the members of the family were equally difficult to like but for clearly understandable reasons.
