Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next novels are fun. They are also kinda hard to explain. The setting is England in an alternate reality where books are all important in society and are actually in a way living entities. The books are structured as mysteries with the main protagonist being the honestly somewhat bland Thursday Next who works for special ops investigating crimes against books.
The books in the series are good and fun to read. Jasper Fforde is not great with characters but he is chock full of clever ideas and imagination. For me, this is a liability at times as he sometimes seems to be just showing off a litany of his clever ideas instead of advancing plot. This particular book seemed to have a lot of that.
